Kids thrive in cool-looking spaces (we all do!). So, when designing a space to do homework, we like to think about form and function. A stylish and productive study space can be defined by a great desk or a colorful caddy. It doesn’t have to break the bank. The key is in finding fun pieces that draw kids in and inspire them to focus. We’re big believers in “if you build it, they will come.” So let’s start building!
All On The Surface: Desks
A desk is a great place to start when creating a stylish study space. While some kids like to work at the kitchen table, others might focus better in their rooms. Here are some great desk ideas—in a range of price points—that can fit even in the smallest of rooms.
If your child loves shades of blue and green, check out the Tabloid Desk from Blu Dot, Serena & Lily’s Wooster Desk and the IKEA Alex Desk. We like Crate & Kids’ Gemini Desk for its clean lines and clever space to hang a backpack. The Daisy Mini Desk from West Elm Kids and Blaire Writing Desk from Pottery Barn (PB) Teen are lovely-looking space savers. If you’re looking to create a shared workspace, the RH Teen Avalon Double Desk is a gorgeous solution.
PRO TIP: Get your kids involved! Give them a choice of 2 or 3 desks and let them pick their favorite.
Light It Up: Desk Lamps
When it comes to studying, lighting is key. Desk lamps can be a practical and fun way to brighten up a study space. Schoolhouse’s Isaac Desk Lamp has a number of fun colors to choose from. The PB Kids Mini Taylor Desk Lamp can go glam or mid-century modern depending on your decor. And who doesn’t love a lamp that’s pretty in pink? The Penn Desk Lamp from PB Kids brightens the mood—and the space.
PRO TIP: Surprise your child with a lamp in their favorite color!
Hold It: Baskets & Bins
Baskets and bins are a great way to contain schoolwork. Muuto’s soft and sturdy Restore Basket is the perfect size for papers, books or even a backpack. The Folden Lane Basket from Kohl’s also does the trick at a good price point. The Quinn Storage Basket from PB Kids is a lovely way to keep schoolwork organized, and kids will know where to put their things using these personalized baskets from Etsy and Lands’ End.
PRO TIP: Get your kids in the habit of cleaning up their workspace every day and putting things away in their designated places.
All Together Now: Desk Organizers
New school supplies are always fun, but let’s face it, they can run amuck. That’s where stylish desk organizers come in. The Gold Scallop Rotating Organizer by PB Teen and ThreeByThree Seattle’s Acrylic Desktop Organizer from The Container Store are elegant and practical solutions. For the kid who likes to switch up where they study, the Most Modest Elin Desk Caddy from West Elm is a terrific grab-and-go option. And the colorful IKEA BÖNSYRSA Desk Organizer will always make homework time fun.
In Sight: Pinboards and Bulletin Boards
A pinboard is a great way to personalize a study space and keep important information in view. We love the clean lines of PB Teen’s Foley Pinboard, which comes in black and brass. For a more romantic vibe, LoveShackFancy’s nail-free pinboards in pink floral and gold from PB Teen are two of our faves.
So there you have it, some of our favorite pieces to create a stylish study space. We hope you’re feeling inspired. If you would like help designing a homework station or would like to take advantage of our trade discounts, please feel free to reach out. We’d love to help!
