Hi, I'm Cary.

Certified Professional Organizer® and founder working alongside my team to design thoughtful systems that restore balance to busy lives.

MEET THE TEAM

My son, Max, is heading to CU Boulder this fall (Go Buffs!), and we’ve got college packing on the brain. We want to make sure he has everything he needs—but we definitely don’t want to go overboard. (Dorm rooms can be small!)

So we consulted the pros: students and parents who’ve done this before. We asked them for their best advice, essential packing tips, and what they’d skip if they could do it again.

Here’s what we learned:

1. Embrace Minimalism

Packing, traveling, unpacking, and setting up your dorm all become so much easier when you keep it simple.

2. Don’t Bring Your Entire Closet

Pack 2–3 weeks’ worth of everyday clothes, plus a few workout outfits and one or two dressier options. Hold off on winter gear—you can bring it after break. Get a feel for the campus vibe before hauling everything you own.

3. Keep Shoes Simple

Stick to the basics:

  • Comfy everyday shoes
  • Running or athletic shoes
  • Dressier shoes
  • Flip-flops or slides
  • Shower shoes

4. Skip the Robe

Almost every student we spoke with said they never wore a robe. A towel wrap or oversized tee is usually enough for post-shower modesty.

5. Pack the Random but Useful Stuff

Scissors, tape, and a can/bottle opener always come in handy. A small toolkit will make you surprisingly popular.

6. Be Smart About Travel

If you’re flying:

  • Check as many bags as your airline allows (and use your parents’ baggage allowance if they’re dropping you off).
  • Be mindful of weight limits!

Bring a small carry-on or weekender bag for overnight trips or quick visits home.

7. Tame the Tech

There are never enough outlets—and they’re never where you want them. Bring a power strip with surge protection and USB ports.

8. Coordinate Big Items

Talk to your roommate before buying shared items like mini fridges or microwaves. And find out what your dorm already provides—some supply lamps, trash cans, or mirrors.

9. Plan for Laundry

Laundry pods are so much easier to carry than a jug of liquid detergent. And don’t forget a laundry bag or hamper. We love this one from IKEA.

10. Shop Smart

  • Use student discounts at places like IKEA, Target, and The Container Store.
  • Order dorm essentials ahead and pick them up near campus—or ship directly to your dorm.

11. Settle In Before Organizing

Wait to see how the space functions before buying organizing products. Once you’re moved in, you’ll have a much better sense of what you actually need.

Some of our favorite go-tos for college organizing: The Container Store, IKEA, and Amazon.

12. Create a List

After talking with our “pros,” we put together a printable packing list to make things easier. You don’t need to bring everything on the list, but it’s a great starting point—and there’s room to add your own must-haves, too.

We hope this helps! For more dorm product recommendations, check out our Super Streamlined, Stress-Free College Dorm Essentials Guide.
