Organizing a storage shed can be done in 5 easy steps. In this video, I walk you through each step to organize your shed which will help you find what you need and access what you want. An organized storage shed will deliver a wheelbarrow-full of happiness for everyone in your family!
Step 1: Take Everything Out
This first step is the most important step of all: you have to get everything out to understand what you have.
Step 2: Sort & Categorize
As you start pulling items out, place them into categories: holiday decorations, sports gear, travel, memorabilia and so on. Use this time to edit out any items you no longer want or need as well.
Step 3: Containerize
If you don’t already have bins or boxes, get some so you can contain the items you have sorted. Keeping items in a contained vessel will make all the difference in keeping your shed organized.
Step 4: Zone Your Shed
Keeping frequency of use in mind, start mapping out your shed and where things should go. For example, bikes, sports equipment and gardening tools should be in the front of the unit while lesser used or accessed items like holiday decor or memorabilia can go towards the back.
Step 5: Install & Label
If your shed doesn’t already have shelving, now is a good time to think about doing that – shelving immediately adds 4-5x more storage space in the same footprint, and it allows you to maximize your vertical storage space. You can place items in their zone by shelf or shelving unit – and then label those bins and shelves so everyone knows where things are – and where they go back to.
There is now a happy home for everything you own, and your organized storage shed is now achieved!
